Result of Flat-panel TV Shipment in 2011 - Korea Leads, China Rapidly Progresses, Japan Slows
02-14-2012   |   Displaybank

According to the result of flat-panel TV shipment, whereas Korea-based companies maintain the lead following last year, and China-based companies put up a good fight based on their domestic market, Japan-based companies show a stagnant trend. Samsung Electronics ranks top with 20% market share, followed by LG Electronics and Sony with 13% and 9% respectively in overall flat-panel TV (LCD, PDP) shipments aggregate result.

Also in LCD TV shipment of 2011, Samsung ranks top, followed by LG and Sony. Whereas Samsung and LG's LCD TV shipments grow by 12% and 6% YoY respectively, Sony is found to show 6% negative growth. Top 3 companies' shipment all exceeded 20 million units, followed by Toshiba, Sharp, and Panasonic with 10 million-unit scale respectively. More than anything else in 2011, China-based companies' rapid progress stood out. China-based top 6 companies recoded 34% in average growth rate. In particular, TCL is poised for 1 million units as shipping 94 million units, 75% YoY increase. (*Changhong, Haier, Hisense, Konka, Skyworth, TCL)

Reviewing the PLP TV shipment of 2011, Panasonic ranks top with 5.7 million units, followed by Samsung with 52 million units and LG Electronics with 4.3 million units. Whereas Panasonic showed 20% negative growth over the previous year, Samsung Electronics grew by 4% and closed the gap in shipment with Panasonic. Also in the PDP TV market, China-based Changhong progressed rapidly as recording 1.5 million units, which is a 158% YoY growth.

Also in 2012, China-based companies' growth is expected to continue while Korea-based companies are predicted to keep the lead. On the other hand, in terms of Japan-based companies, their competition in the global TV market does not look easy. Displaybank says that to secure the competitiveness in emerging markets will be the key strategy of 2012 since the development of overseas markets is more important than anything else due to the aftermath of sluggish Japanese domestic market which has sharply shrunk since 2H'11.
