Compensation Film & TAC/Acryl Film Analysis – 2013

The introduction and adoption of alternatives to TAC film was a hot issue in 2012. Now the market focus is shifting toward how those alternative films will be able to penetrate into the TAC film-dominated PVA protection film market this year. LG Chem Ltd. and Nitto Denko Corporation have already been increasing the adoption of acryl film and further investing in the next production lines. Considering these factors, acryl film is expected to take up 18% of the PVA protection film market by 2017, compared to a meager 4% in 2012. In addition, polarizers using PET has been steadily adopted, albeit on a small quantity, while the usage of non-TAC compensation films is increasing in VA mode. Around next year, a product with a polarizer that uses no single TAC film is expected to hit the market.

When it comes to mobile phones and tablet PCs which are driving demand for touch screen interface sharply higher, there is a growing need of thin-type polarizers. To meet those needs, thin-type polarizers in various forms are being developed. Adoption of acryl seems to reflect the trend. The latest development involves methods from reducing each film’s thickness to thinly coating PVA resin instead of PVA film on a base film and then hardening, which is called resin PVA polarizer. This indicates there will be a groundbreaking change in the structure and thickness of polarizers. The figure below summarizes thin-type polarizer development trends.
